Students are expected to work together as a team, either as part of a “community” or as an individual. The coursework, research, seminar and field work are guided by the theory and interpretation of selected scholars. Students may also seek to specialize in a selected area, such as “Native American folklore” or archaeology. Courses offer the opportunity to learn about the history and archaeology of the peoples that have lived within the regions, areas and peoples of the Americas. It is the goal of the College to encourage a general education in the use of folk-based media, including music, language and iconography, and to stimulate students' interest in a range of cultural and theoretical perspectives. To be truly effective at the college, we need folklorists, especially those trained in the social sciences.
